Stephen Bush
Australian artist Stephen Bush morphs traditional landscape paintings into dream-like visions of a world interrupted by human desires. In the works presented here, Bush evokes the tension in our relationship with nature through unexpected combinations of subject matter, painting styles, and colors. He creates idyllic scenes typical of 19th century romantic landscape painting, and disrupts them with archetypes of the manmade. Against the backdrop of alpine beauty, we are confronted with mid-century modern furniture, contemporary architecture, wooden cabins and metal trailers, human objects that have been transplanted into the middle of picturesque scenes. He uses pungent, saturated colors and masterful combinations of depth and flatness, to highlight the unnatural presence of these objects in the landscape. The unsettling scenes melt into a whorl of fluid strokes, drifting between the real and the abstract, the remembered and the imagined. This duality in the work mirrors our conflicted relationship with the natural world, and invites us to question that relationship. Will we continue to transform every pristine landscape into a domesticated stage for human drama? Or will we resist this urge, choosing instead to model the human ecosystem after the natural ones around us?
