Sonja Hinrichsen
Sonja Hinrichsen creates large-scale snow drawings that transform winter landscapes into poetic celebrations of nature. With a pair of snowshoes and the help of local volunteers, Hinrichsen imprints her dynamic drawings into freshly fallen snow. These drawings are ephemeral by design and comprised of forms that are reminiscent of glyphs created by aboriginal peoples. Hinrichsen’s immersion in the environment and use of primitive iconography evoke a time when humanity had a deeper spiritual connection to nature and moved through the landscape with a lighter tread. This environmental message is more overt in works such as “We Are The Water,” which references a river in Colorado that has been altered by a man made dam. In this work, Hinrichsen and her snowshoe volunteers created a fanciful representation of the original flow of the river and its tributaries, projecting a bittersweet memory of the river’s past wanderings. Through her majestic snow drawings, Hinrichsen urges us to reconnect with the natural world and to treat it with reverence and grace.
