Right now 1 billion people on this planet suffer from hunger and the planet must produce 70 percent more food to meet the coming hunger needs, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. We don’t have enough arable land and fresh water to feed 2 billion more without incurring severe losses to the natural world. But there is a solution. Studies show that by implementing better and proven management measures we can potentially increase the global fish catch by up to 40 percent from current levels. We can rebuild ocean biodiversity and abundance and be able to feed nearly a billion people a healthy seafood meal each day. Oceana campaigns in the countries that control nearly 40 percent of the world’s wild fish catch in order to win policy victories that can increase biodiversity in our oceans and deliver more seafood to the future.

Offshore Drilling

The dangers and damages of offshore oil drilling have never been clearer since the BP oil disaster in 2010. 11 people died that day and for the next 87 days after the explosion, oil gushed into the open ocean, polluting our waters, killing sea life and putting communities out of work. The question is not if there will be another spill, but when. Offshore drilling operations are a source of insidious leaks and catastrophic spills dangerous blowouts. Oceana works to stop the expansion of offshore oil drilling. With our supporters, we’ve made progress in protecting the U.S. Atlantic Ocean and Arctic Ocean from expanded offshore drilling. But this battle is far from over.

Responsible Fishing

Overfishing is rapidly depleting many of the world’s fish populations. The consequences of overfishing are severe and widespread – from starving sea lion pups washing ashore on the U.S. West Coast to sustenance fishermen in the Philippines failing to catch enough to feed their hungry families. Oceana works to reduce overfishing by advocating for science-based catch limits, reducing harmful fishing subsidies and stopping illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. By promoting responsible fishing practices, Oceana is safeguarding entire ocean food webs from catastrophic collapse.

Preserving the Arctic Ocean

The Arctic is one of the most beautiful and forbidding places on Earth, where temperatures regularly plunge well below zero and the time between sunset and sunrise is sometimes measured in months rather than hours. The Arctic is at the most dramatic of crossroads. The pressures of climate change and industrialization create a bottleneck for survival in the Arctic Ocean. The more pressure we put on the Arctic, the narrower the bottleneck becomes. To best protect Arctic marine ecosystems and preserve opportunities for the subsistence way of life of Arctic peoples, Oceana is focused on addressing all of the threats together – climate change, industrial fishing, shipping, pollution, and oil and gas exploration and development.
